A lively centre for the district: Exploring the newly designed pedestrian area Meidlinger Hauptstrasse

Starting at Schönbrunnerstrasse, the tour shows newly redesigned parts of Meidlinger Hauptstrasse as well as current construction sites. Meidlinger Hauptstrasse, one of Vienna’s most important shopping streets and at the same time lively centre of the 12th district (named Meidling), is currently in a period of transformation. Since 2014, this formerly outdated pedestrian zone is being reshaped in several stages, following plans by Hamburg-based landscape architects WES & Partner. Their project won the international competition for the renewal of this shopping street due to its high design quality as well as its socially, ecologically and economically balanced approach to the task. A wide range of attractive squares and common areas will emphasize the role of Meidlinger Hauptstrasse as a functional and pedestrian-friendly centre of the district in the future. The tour leads to the Meidling railway station, the district’s most important public transport hub.
