In between cultures: The transformation of the Brunnenmarkt market and its neighbourhood
During this tour we will walk along the recently redesigned Ottakringer Strasse, furnished with pedestrian-friendly elements in the public space and a curb extensions at tram stops that double as cycle paths. On the way to Brunnenmarkt – the longest street market in Europe with approximately 160 booths – we will pass the Yppenplatz, where the participants will experience high-quality recreation areas and a social mix of people. This place experienced an upgrading through extensive renovation, which was accompanied by public participation procedures. Additionally, multicultural initiatives were created and the square became a vibrant meeting place for the neighbourhood. The route ends at the newly created “Yppenheim forecourt” focusing on future planning perspectives in the area of the recently renovated subway station Josefstädterstrasse designed by Otto Wagner.
